Red Rocks is primarily a watercolor landscape with a touch of white gouache to accent clouds in the sky. At the beginning of the process I applied gesso to the paper. The gesso created forms on the paper which gave me ideas about what I would like the painting to become. The process of painting Red Rocks was in two steps. First I applied light transparent colors overall, and then followed with a second coat of bolder, more intense colors. I used a full spectrum of colors with complementary colors juxtaposed throughout. Warm colors dominate this painting which reminds me of the Red Rocks area in Colorado.
