"Anticipation" was inspired by a walk I took in my neighborhood on a crisp autumn morning. As I crossed a street near my home, I saw this group of high school students waiting for the bus. I was intrigued by the cast shadows on the retaining wall behind them, and I wondered what these students were thinking, with the day and almost the entire school year ahead of them. When I got home, I did some sketches and some journaling, where I wrote about my concerns that these kids, and their cohort, must have so much to juggle in their young lives, having gone through a pandemic, and all the complicated turmoil in the world, they are still have to figure out how to launch into adulthood. I wanted to paint the brightness of the morning in contrast to the heaviness of life, especially for young people.
