This painting is inspired by the sunflower volunteers that have sprouted in my yard this summer. The grasshoppers have been really bad this year, killing many of my flowers which is very dispiriting. Even the hairy, slightly prickly leaves of the sunflowers have been chewed, but the sunflowers don't let it stop them. They keep blooming, hopefully, in the rocky gravel they sprouted in, tattered leaves and all. They are an inspiration to me.
