Spring Light, Poipu, Kaua’i portrays a scene near my home on Kaua’i, in Hawaii. I love painting this beach at dusk, when the colors of the sky, water, and sand are intense. At the same time, there is a simplicity in this landscape, as the colors and shapes in the mountains to the west and in the beach and adjacent park soften. I strove to emphasize with the curving road and shoreline the circular sweep of the ocean, and to contrast this motion with the angular forms in the mountains, the sky’s horizontal bands of color, and a solid, block-like house in the foreground.
