Sitka spruces are a unique conifer that grows only along the western coast; it requires the salty air of marine fog. It is one of the most productive trees by annual volume of growth in the world, as well as home to endangered species like the marbled murrelet. Whenever I see one I feel I am seeing not only an entity but a community of being.
