When I visited Sausalito a number of years ago I was intrigued by the number of houseboats of every description, connected by a haphazard arrangement of floating docks and gangplanks. Many floating homes were remnants of old houseboats cobbled together and made habitable with salvaged bits of building material. The abstract pattern of shapes they created was irresistible.
