Capturing light on the tiny cactus spines creates a dynamic contrast between light and dark. Shadows cast from various other fronds and foliage also lead to a unique design and direct the eye throughout the painting until it settles on the flower with hidden secrets within. Using line, an inorganic element with the organic curves of the cactus makes an interesting contrast. I enjoyed trying out different ways to create the background before settling on the moonlight night sky.
