The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands on Bled Island in a tiny tear-shaped island in the picturesque Lake Bled of Slovenia. I painted this scene with snow-capped mountains and fog drifting behind the spire to define atmospheric perspective and add to the grandeur of the scene. Underpainting provided a luminous foundation for the landscape elements and glowing rooftops. A diagonal path of light from the steps moves upward to bring the viewer's eye to the steeple, the focal point of the composition.
