Michael Solovyev is from Montreal, Canada and is often called a “sunny watercolorist”. His airy, transparent paintings look as though they emit sunlight. His traditional academic art education, extensive experience as a theater stage designer, and his career as an oil painter have informed his current priority as a watercolor artist – the depiction of light.

Michael’s work is universally appealing, and in his January demo, you’ll see his unique technique for creating his beautiful work. He uses a step-by-step and layer-by-layer image construction, using both dry brush technique and soft transitions.

What you’ll see during the demo is a preview of his upcoming 2-day online workshop (April 16-17, 2026), which will be a focus on portraiture.
