Paintings come alive when artists take risks and break a few rules!

In this video workshop, Angela Fehr will share how she’s shifted her approach to watercolor from rigid perfectionism to playful, experimental watercolour painting. She will teach you how to use the skills and techniques of watercolor with an intuitive trust in the process, working in a series to shift from literal to abstract, making room for mistakes and experimentation that lets your unique artistic voice shine on the paper.

Angela believes that the perceived limitations that you might hold are the key to your individual strength and voice and will offer suggestions to help you shift your thinking from “fight” to “freedom!” If you’re struggling to let go of control and play with watercolour more freely, this session will inspire and encourage you!

This is a fast-paced workshop as Angela works rapidly and intuitively with many techniques and approaches demonstrated. Consider watching and painting as best you can and then rewatch the workshop more slowly.

About Angela:
Living in rural northern British Columbia, Canada, Angela’s art turned a corner from rigid perfectionism to freedom and fluidity as she learned to trust the medium and pour love and presence into her paintings. In 2012 Angela began sharing what she’d learned about watercolor’s beautiful and unpredictable characteristics on YouTube and in online classes, teaching thousands of other artists how to find their own artistic freedom. Angela’s approach to watercolour is one that prioritizes self-expression, developing her paintings through multiple, experimental studies. Angela describes her painting process as “heart-led,” pairing her extensive knowledge of watercolour technique with a willingness to allow the painting to evolve with freedom as each brush stroke suggests a new direction to be explored with curiosity and vulnerability.

Materials List:
Plan to use your usual watercolor supplies, a variety of different brushes, and a spray bottle filled with water.
Paper: 100% cotton 140 lb cold press (usually Arches, Hahnemühle or Fabriano)
Brushes: a variety of watercolor brushes for varying marks
Paint: I use a variety of colors and brands – bring what you prefer to use! Usually, I get obsessed with a particular colour or pigment and will share my current favorite supplies during the workshop recording.
I will also demonstrate some techniques using:
Caran D’Ache Neocolour II water-soluble crayons
stencils
Mini Mister spray bottles
General’s Sketching Pencil – 6B
