SUMMARY:NWWS June 2023 General Meeting Demonstration with Dale Laitinen
DESCRIPTION:Dale Laitinen has been painting for over forty years\, thirty five of those in watercolor\, and he’ll soon be sharing his vibrant talent with NWWS. \nHis watercolors are fluid and exuberant\, with confidant full on brushstrokes. He moves easily between objective and nonobjective painting\, sometimes somewhere in-between\, but always intriguing and an invitation for the viewer to stay a while. Contrast that loose energy with his equally beautiful\, carefully engineered more structured paintings and you come away amazed at such a wonderful talent range. His travels across the American west figure prominently in his work. \nOne of the signatures of a Laitinen painting is the long view with the natural forms of the topography being foremost. His works extend to the interaction between structures such as roads\, dams\, canals\, powerhouses\, and the natural landscape. In one of these paintings one might find a concrete dam that spans a river canyon\, or a highway that cuts through desert sandstone\, or a shadow of a bridge that crawls slowly across a red rock wall. \nLaitinen’s work has been featured in several books\, including “The Splash Series”\, “Painting with the White of your Paper”\, and “The The Transparent Watercolor Wheel”\, and in several periodicals\, including “The Artist’s Magazine”\, “Watercolor Magic”\, “Watercolor Magazine”\, and “Drawingboard Magazine”. \nHe is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West and an active workshop instructor. \nJoin us for this very special night with an immense talent and enjoy watching Dale work his brushstroke magic.

SUMMARY:NWWS May 2023 General Meeting Demonstration with Mark Mehaffey
DESCRIPTION:What a treat we have for you on May 23\, 2023! \nMark Mehaffey\, AWS\, NWS (Dolphin Fellow)\, TWS\, and many other significant professional honors\, will join our general meeting as demo artist. Mark works primarily in watercolor and acrylic\, the “other” media. His work ranges from beautiful watercolor paintings to dynamic abstract work of a personal nature\, often executed on Yupo substrate. He is always a sought after instructor\, juror\, and demonstration artist. \n“During the time I have been painting (more than 50 years) my interest in the act of painting has never waned\,” says Mark in his artist’s statement. “However\, the content of my work and my technical abilities are constantly evolving. This state of change is something that all artists embrace. It is through change that growth occurs. To be timid\, safe\, complacent or overly satisfied does not push the boundaries of creativity.” \nMark is also the author of “Creative Watercolor Workshop” (2005)\, later rereleased as “Creative Watercolor and Acrylic Workshop” (2013). He also created twelve popular instructional videos and has appeared in many publications. He was featured in “Masters of Watercolor” written by Konstantin Sterkhov and “Inspirations & Technical Breakthroughs: Secrets from the Contemporary International Watercolor Masters Volume 1” written by Zhou Tianya & Ruan Hoe. \nMehaffey’s paintings are included in corporate\, public and private collections including Blue Cross Blue Shield and The Arches Paper Co.\, USA. In 2018 he was invited to participate in the International Watercolor Masters Exhibition in Weston Park England. His work is included in permanent collections of transparent watercolors at major institutions such as the Neville Public Museum (WI)\, the Muskegon Museum of Art\, Muskegon (MI)\, and the National Watercolor Museum of Mexico City\, among others. \nJoin us for what will be a memorable evening from one of America’s most respected artists.

SUMMARY:Michael Solovyev Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Portrait in Watercolor: Light and Dynamic\nCost: $50.00  |   Participants: Limit 50 \nCreating lively\, dynamic portraits using the core potentials of watercolor: transparency\, lightness\, and spontaneity. \nThe first “Workshops International” (online) mini workshop will be taught by artist Michael Solovyev from Montreal\, Canada. Michael is often called a “sunny watercolorist” – his airy\, transparent paintings look as though they emit sunlight. His traditional academic art education\, extensive experience as a theater stage designer\, and his career as an oil painter have informed his current priority as a watercolor artist – the depiction of light. \nMichael will introduce you to the project construction technique that he uses most often – step-by-step and layer-by-layer image construction\, using both dry brush technique and soft transitions. Where to start? How to structure the work correctly? Together\, incrementally\, you will make a complex\, detailed portrait project.

SUMMARY:AZR - May: Andy Evansen
DESCRIPTION:Please note the change of date to May 1\, 2023. \nAndy Evansen’s focus will be on plein air painting during this month’s AZR event \nAPRIL 20\, 2023: DEADLINE TO SUBMIT PAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE. If you would like to submit a plein air painting for possible critique\, register right away and find the instructions within the registration confirmation for the event.\nAndy is a Signature Member of AWS\, PAPA\, RRWS\, and TWSA. His recognizable ‘style’ was inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain\, David Curtis\, Ed Seago and Edward Wesson\, among others. He found himself attempting to capture the landscape with the same economy of brushstroke\, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition\, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty\, subjects that many would simply pass by.

All art lovers are encouraged to register for this special event. \nDon’t miss this special day with one of America’s finest artists and instructors.

SUMMARY:Artist Zoom Room - April: Jed Dorsey
DESCRIPTION:NWWS is delighted to bring the brilliance of Jed Dorsey to our Artist Zoom Room on April 10\, 2023. Many NWWS members work in several mediums\, so this demo will be a treat for acrylic artists and encouragment for others to try this very versatile watermedia. \nJed represents the fourth generation of artists in his family. His father\, Jack Dorsey\, is also a professional\, well known artist. Like many artists\, Jed was painting at an early age and selling paintings as young as age eleven. \nJed and his family traditionally pursued watercolor\, but gallery hopping in Canada exposed him to the intriguing brilliance of acrylic and it was instantly appealing. That very week began his exciting journey with acrylics. He painted for many years as a secondary pursuit\, but became a full time artist in 2016. He loves how light changes objects such as common garbage cans\, buildings\, plants trees–everything. Filtered sunlight shining through trees onto a road\, river\, sidewalk\, or path is favorite subject matter. Having lived in both rural and urban locations he sees beauty in both lush landscapes and structured cityscapes. Whether painting en plein air or in the studio with a photo reference\, he interprets what he sees with an intent to create a beautiful piece of personal art\, nothing literal.

SUMMARY:NWWS February 2023 General Meeting Demonstration with David R. Smith
DESCRIPTION:David R. Smith enjoys the challenge of working in harmony with a fluid medium\, allowing the most beautiful results to occur naturally. David utilizes a number of techniques such as working wet into wet\, glazing\, pouring\, spattering\, and spraying. These techniques not only keep the painting fresh\, but produce exciting interminglings and textures effortlessly. \nDavid’s favorite subjects tend to be found in nature and he loves to travel abroad as well as explore state and national parks for inspiration. Depicting a subject in great light\, capitalizing on the contrast developed by light and shadow\, while showcasing the assortment of jewels that happen naturally through the fluid medium keeps David eager to paint his next creation. \nDavid has studied under numerous instructors in the states and in China. He has displayed his work in galleries and museums across the United States and his work has been awarded at the state and national level. David has received Signature Membership with the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, and others
