SUMMARY:MAY 2025 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH JESSICA BRYANT
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 6:00 (Pacific time)\nJessica Bryant’s work is a deep reflection of her immersion in and love for the natural landscape. In early childhood\, her bedroom window looked out over an undeveloped field of tall prairie grasses and birds. She spent many long days listening to the wind and watching storms thunder across the rolling hills of her grandparents farm in Minnesota. Running through corn fields\, climbing trees\, and staring into the night sky to watch the milky way fueled her intense love and connection to nature. \nGiven her first camera at age 6\, she’s been photographing landscapes ever since\, and uses her photography as a sketching medium. Her keen interest in social and cultural history strongly influences her work. \nJessica’s paintings have received many awards\, have been featured in national and international publications\, and can be found in numerous private collections. \nAn award winning artist\, she is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, Northwest Watercolor Society\, and the Idaho Watercolor Society. She regularly exhibits with many other prestigious organizations\, and teaches workshops and classes out of Redbrick Art Studio in downtown Coeur d”Alene\, ID.

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 2025 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH RON STOCKE
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 6:00 (Pacific time)\nBorn 1966 in Chico California\, Ron Stocke moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1979. \nInterested in drawing and painting at an early age\, his career as an artist was shaped by life events that really encouraged him to explore ways to cope with everything in a positive\, productive way. His first experience with painting came during school as a child when he was exposed to watercolors. Even at that young age\, he found a love for that medium that would grow into a career that has lasted throughout his life. \nThe watercolor medium is honest\, challenging and always new. It is the oldest pursuit that I know and has enriched my life at every level. While sometimes frustrating even for the most experienced watercolor painter\, it is invigorating and always a learning experience. \nAn award-winning watercolor artist\, Ron is a regular contributor to\, and has been a cover artist for \’93Watercolor Artist Magazine\’94 as well as other publications. \nTeaching comprehensive workshops throughout North America and Europe\, he also conducts demonstrations and lectures on various art materials and creating a safe\, environmentally friendly studio. Ron holds Signature Membership with the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, Northwest Watercolor Society\, is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour\, and a member of the American Impressionist Society. He has been an Artist Ambassador for M.Graham Watercolors for over 15 years.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL - Pablo Ruben
DESCRIPTION:PABLO RUBEN REGISTRATION BEGINS SEPT 13\, 2025\nWORKSHOP: NOV. 8\, 2025 FROM 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (Pacific) \nNOTICE TO WA STATE RESIDENTS: Effective Oct. 1\, 2025\, NWWS is obligated to charge WA state residents sales tax on our online workshops. This does NOT apply to anyone residing outside of WA state.  \nPablo Rubén (Spain) has been a dedicated\, professional artist for more than 20 years and\, since 2007\, specializes exclusively in watercolor. He participates in exhibitions\, festivals\, and numerous outdoor competitions\, and has achieved about 500 awards from around the world. \nPablo currently teaches watercolor courses internationally\, including in Los Angeles\, Moscow\, Seattle\, Vancouver\, Italy\, Mexico\, and many more locations. \nHis time is shared equally between his studio in Griñón and the outdoors. When working in the studio\, he uses reference photographs taken during travels and uses a photo retouching program to refine the images before the painting begins. Outdoors\, he works directly from the subject but also takes a mobile phone image to help establish the composition and to have a reference for the lights and shadows that change so quickly. Usually\, his outdoor works are part of “quick painting competitions\,” as they are called in Spain. \nPablo sees water as the undisputed protagonist of the landscape\, and lowers the horizon line with a point of view almost at the level of the pond or the river in front of him. With this approach\, the perspective is more open at both ends and the space feels more vast. With more space devoted to the water\, he finds many interesting ways to render water and make it come o life. \nHis exceptional work and award winning paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world. \nNOVEMBER 8\, 2025 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:\nYou will learn to paint two different types of water reflections as Pablo teaches the fundamentals of painting water as your subject matter. We will consider the amount of pigment in the brush\, the proper amount of water\, combinations of brush loads\, the state of the paper\, and other considerations that impact the work. We will work with big washes\, calm water in the landscapes\, puddles\, lakes\, and the movement of water when painting waves. \nPablo will review all of his chosen materials and equipment. \nSupply List

SUMMARY:MIKE KOWALSKI WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATIONS OPEN FEB. 21\, 2026!\nMIKE KOWALSKI 2-DAY WORKSHOP\nAPR. 22-23\, 2026 (online)\nWORKSHOP HOURS: 9:00 – 4:00 (Pacific time) \nNOTICE TO WA STATE RESIDENTS: Effective Oct. 1\, 2025\, NWWS is obligated to charge WA state residents sales tax on our workshops. This does NOT apply to anyone residing outside of WA state. \nCLICK TO VIEW THE WORKSHOP FLYER \nPAINTING IN THE SHADOWS\nWhen we think of watercolor\, we often think of “light”. Capturing warm light with transparent washes of color seems made for watercolor; however\, you can’t really have light without shadow. Shadows can be an incidental part of a picture\, like a slim line coming from a lamp post\, or they can make up a crucial part of a painting. We don’t often think of featuring those kinds of darks in a watercolor painting\, and Mike Kowalski’s workshop is designed to make the shadow areas rich\, interesting\, and complex. \nYou will study how shadows can add an essential punch to paintings. Whether used as a compositional element\, design\, color variation\, or as a means to set a painting’s mood\, this workshop will help guide you in the important aspects of painting shadows and shadowed areas. \nMike’s early art inspirations come from literature\, in essence the pictures in the books that were read to him or by him. The chapters of those books were often illustrated by renowned artists like N.C. Wyeth. Wyeth was a master at using shadows to create drama in his compositions. A favorite Sargent painting of Mike’s features soft painting effects of figures in shadow. Hopper used shadows to a significant impact as well\, breaking up the picture with interesting shapes. \nHe especially likes shadows for the opportunities they provide for soft-edged detail. The lack of light keeps the contrast between light and dark much more subtle and fun to paint! Mixing shadow colors can be exhilarating\, especially when painting outdoors. \nThis workshop will feature several ways for effective shadow painting. Attendees will sketch based on reference material and prepare a value study. The value study can be invaluable in providing a mental “road map” for the actual painting. Color mixing will also be covered. Students will focus on enhancing shadows with subtle changes in color and color temperature to add depth and pop to the painting\, avoiding dull shadows. \nLandscape will be the chosen subject matter and it will likely include a figurative element. A simple still life as warm-up will help students understand basic approaches to shadow painting. \nMichael looks forward to what will be an exciting workshop!

SUMMARY:WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL - Sebastian Thommen
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION BEGINS MARCH 15\, 2026\nWORKSHOP: MAY 9\, 2026 FROM 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (Pacific) \nNOTICE TO WA STATE RESIDENTS: Effective Oct. 1\, 2025\, NWWS is obligated to charge WA state residents sales tax on our online workshops. This does NOT apply to anyone residing outside of WA state.  \nIrish Greens & Rolling Hills: Painting Depth and Light in County Galway \nAbout Sebastian:\nSebastian Thommen resides in Ireland. He discovered a love for watercolor in his youth\, keeping it as a personal passion while pursuing acting. After later transitioning to painting professionally\, he quickly gained recognition\, winning the Silver Award and Artists’ Choice Award at Art in the Open in 2023. In 2025\, he was invited to serve as one of the three judges at Europe’s biggest plein-air festival\, featured in Artists & Illustrators magazine\, and awarded Best Urban Scene at the Watercolour Society of Ireland Annual Exhibition. \nAbout the Workshop\, Sebastian’s Description:\n“In this three-hour workshop\, I’ll take you through my full process for painting a classic Irish landscape — rolling hills\, a sunlit cottage\, long tree shadows\, and of course\, a few sheep to bring the scene to life. \nWe’ll begin with a quick 10-minute study. This isn’t a separate exercise — it’s my way of thinking on paper before starting the main painting. I’ll show you exactly how I approach composition: what I move\, what I simplify\, and how I decide on a design that feels pleasing and strong. You’ll see my reasoning as I shape the scene the way I want to paint it. \nNext\, I’ll spend about 10 minutes demonstrating how I mix my greens. Not everyone loves working with green\, but I have a way of making them interesting\, lively\, and harmonious. I’ll explain the logic behind the colour choices so you can apply the same ideas in your own landscapes. \nFrom there\, we’ll dive into the main painting — rolling hills in County Galway. I’ll guide you through creating depth\, layering washes\, and building a strong sense of distance. We’ll work from the large shapes first and gradually refine the cottage\, trees\, stone walls\, and finishing touches. And yes — we’ll add sheep! They’re simple\, fun\, and they instantly give the landscape an unmistakably Irish feel. \nBy the end\, you’ll have a complete painting\, a better understanding of greens\, and a clear roadmap you can use for future scenes. \nI reckon that I will have ample time to create the two\, 10 min lessons before the actual painting. It’s a good way to warm up too!” \nSupply List
