SUMMARY:Samish Island Paintout - September
DESCRIPTION:September is a beautiful month for PaintOut. With a jacket (or not\, if we are lucky)\, artists will be comfortably painting either en plein air or within the lodge. Artists work in any medium they choose: collage\, watercolor\, oil\, pencils\, acrylic.\, and more. We even have quilters and knitters. Some artists work on small pieces\, but there is space for those working very large on the lower level. There is a large bulletin board where artists pin their finished work for all to see\, and artists enjoy being the first one up. \nThe camp’s accommodations are brightly painted quaint heated rustic cabins with a bathroom nearby. For a few more dollars\, there are cabins with a shared bathroom facility\, and accommodations for these are on a first-come-first-served basis with preference given to those who are willing to share. \nCOSTS: Camp cost is very reasonable no matter which accommodation type you choose. For example\, the most popular choice is the “Full 4-day Camp\, Standard Cabin”\, which costs (Sept. 2024) $410.00\, including meals. There are also options to attend camp for fewer days or to attend camp and find accommodations elsewhere. While planning\, note the Cancellation Policy on the registration form. \nWHAT TO BRING: Here is a starter list to assist you in planning: CLICK: WHAT TO BRING LIST

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 2024 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH GEOFF ALLEN
DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER 22\, 2024 – GEOFF ALLEN \nMEETING START TIME: 7:00 (Pacific time) \nThis is the spectacular Geoff Allen’s first demo at NWWS\, and it will be very exciting. As an artist\, plein air painting allows his art to showcase two of his greatest passions: enthusiasm for being outdoors and the beauty of watercolor. Plein air painting keeps his focus intensely on the work while promoting a sense of mystery and spontaneity. His artwork reflects his total embrace and energetic interpretation of the scene in front of him. Watercolor echos the idea of immediacy and nature\, and can be both a blessing and a curse. Geoff loves that aspect of art making\, when something is slightly out of his control and a challenge\, allowing him to feel he is playing with mysterious forces beyond his understanding. \nHis art journey began with a degree in Economics and with a passion for black and white photography\, but a pivotal moment came during a postgraduate summer watercolor class. He was thrilled and hooked! After a busy life in Los Angeles\, including scenic painting\, contemporary art\, gallery management\, poured pastel sculptural wall reliefs\, poured plaster\, fiberglass\, conceptual performance\, folk art\, commercial illustration\, and much more\, Geoff understands the contributions and influence those disciplines have on his passion for plein air watercolor painting. He embraces and appreciates life\, nature\, and the exciting transformation that happens on paper. \nCurrently living in a beautiful coastal town north of San Diego with his wife\, Jennifer\, who is also an artist. Geoff’s list of awards is lengthy\, and includes many prestigious\, first place honors. He is also a highly regarded exhibition juror and has been published in several art magazines including “Plein Air Magazine” and “Watercolor Artist Magazine”. \nBe sure to join us for this exciting evening with one of watercolor’s very best.

But I truly discovered my passion when I began to explore oil painting. For me\, the process of creating begins with a scene that I feel carries a certain energy and evokes an emotion. I find myself drawn to subject matter with rich colors or intriguing light. The vignettes of everyday life that inspire me to paint\, regardless of whether it’s a landscape\, figurative work\, cityscape\, or portrait. It is my primary goal to have each artwork I create resonate with energy and the poetry of light. I follow my own ‘rule’ of painting what is truly important to me and feel very fortunate to be able to share that with all those who support and appreciate my work. There is nothing more gratifying than knowing that my work\, which is so important to me\, is appreciated by others.”

Some artists work on small pieces\, but there is space for those working very large. For example\, the most popular choice is the “Full 4-day Camp\, Standard Cabin”\, which costs (Feb. 2025) $410.00\, including meals. There are also options to attend camp for fewer days or to attend camp and find accommodations elsewhere. While planning\, note the Cancellation Policy on the registration form. \nWHAT TO BRING: Here is a starter list to assist you in planning: CLICK: WHAT TO BRING LIST

SUMMARY:FEBRUARY 2025 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH JUDD MERCER
DESCRIPTION:NOTE NEW MEETING START TIME: 6:00 (Pacific time)\nFrom Judd Mercer: \n“Nature is beautiful\, yes\, but it is quite indifferent to us. Downright terrifying\, sometimes. But it’s a siren’s song. We’re compelled to engage with it\, time and time again. We venture deeper\, we climb higher\, testing the waters and ourselves to see how far we can go. It’s within those wild\, secret places that awe and wonder still exist—a secret reward awaiting the hero who seeks it out. \nMaybe we’re all just trying to get back to the source when there was no ego\, no neurotic nonsense we carry around. Nature gives us that obliteration\, even in small doses. It strips everything away and leaves us saturated with a deep sense of meaning we can feel (even if we cannot put it into words). And for one small moment\, perhaps we feel complete. \nThat’s what painting landscapes means to me.”

SUMMARY:MAY 2025 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH JESSICA BRYANT
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 6:00 (Pacific time)\nJessica Bryant’s work is a deep reflection of her immersion in and love for the natural landscape. In early childhood\, her bedroom window looked out over an undeveloped field of tall prairie grasses and birds. She spent many long days listening to the wind and watching storms thunder across the rolling hills of her grandparents farm in Minnesota. Running through corn fields\, climbing trees\, and staring into the night sky to watch the milky way fueled her intense love and connection to nature. \nGiven her first camera at age 6\, she’s been photographing landscapes ever since\, and uses her photography as a sketching medium. Her keen interest in social and cultural history strongly influences her work. \nJessica’s paintings have received many awards\, have been featured in national and international publications\, and can be found in numerous private collections. \nAn award winning artist\, she is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, Northwest Watercolor Society\, and the Idaho Watercolor Society. She regularly exhibits with many other prestigious organizations\, and teaches workshops and classes out of Redbrick Art Studio in downtown Coeur d”Alene\, ID.

DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 6:00 (Pacific time)\nBorn 1966 in Chico California\, Ron Stocke moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1979. \nInterested in drawing and painting at an early age\, his career as an artist was shaped by life events that really encouraged him to explore ways to cope with everything in a positive\, productive way. SUMMARY:WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL - Pablo Ruben
DESCRIPTION:PABLO RUBEN REGISTRATION BEGINS SEPT 13\, 2025\nWORKSHOP: NOV. 8\, 2025 FROM 10:00 am – 1:00 pm (Pacific) \nNOTICE TO WA STATE RESIDENTS: Effective Oct. 1\, 2025\, NWWS is obligated to charge WA state residents sales tax on our online workshops. This does NOT apply to anyone residing outside of WA state.  \nPablo Rubén (Spain) has been a dedicated\, professional artist for more than 20 years and\, since 2007\, specializes exclusively in watercolor. He participates in exhibitions\, festivals\, and numerous outdoor competitions\, and has achieved about 500 awards from around the world. \nPablo currently teaches watercolor courses internationally\, including in Los Angeles\, Moscow\, Seattle\, Vancouver\, Italy\, Mexico\, and many more locations. \nHis time is shared equally between his studio in Griñón and the outdoors. When working in the studio\, he uses reference photographs taken during travels and uses a photo retouching program to refine the images before the painting begins. Outdoors\, he works directly from the subject but also takes a mobile phone image to help establish the composition and to have a reference for the lights and shadows that change so quickly. Usually\, his outdoor works are part of “quick painting competitions\,” as they are called in Spain. \nPablo sees water as the undisputed protagonist of the landscape\, and lowers the horizon line with a point of view almost at the level of the pond or the river in front of him. With this approach\, the perspective is more open at both ends and the space feels more vast. With more space devoted to the water\, he finds many interesting ways to render water and make it come o life. \nHis exceptional work and award winning paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections around the world. \nNOVEMBER 8\, 2025 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:\nYou will learn to paint two different types of water reflections as Pablo teaches the fundamentals of painting water as your subject matter. We will consider the amount of pigment in the brush\, the proper amount of water\, combinations of brush loads\, the state of the paper\, and other considerations that impact the work. We will work with big washes\, calm water in the landscapes\, puddles\, lakes\, and the movement of water when painting waves. \nPablo will review all of his chosen materials and equipment. \nSupply List
