SUMMARY:NWWS May 2023 General Meeting Demonstration with Mark Mehaffey
DESCRIPTION:What a treat we have for you on May 23\, 2023! \nMark Mehaffey\, AWS\, NWS (Dolphin Fellow)\, TWS\, and many other significant professional honors\, will join our general meeting as demo artist. Mark works primarily in watercolor and acrylic\, the “other” media. His work ranges from beautiful watercolor paintings to dynamic abstract work of a personal nature\, often executed on Yupo substrate. He is always a sought after instructor\, juror\, and demonstration artist. \n“During the time I have been painting (more than 50 years) my interest in the act of painting has never waned\,” says Mark in his artist’s statement. “However\, the content of my work and my technical abilities are constantly evolving. This state of change is something that all artists embrace. It is through change that growth occurs. To be timid\, safe\, complacent or overly satisfied does not push the boundaries of creativity.” \nMark is also the author of “Creative Watercolor Workshop” (2005)\, later rereleased as “Creative Watercolor and Acrylic Workshop” (2013). He also created twelve popular instructional videos and has appeared in many publications. He was featured in “Masters of Watercolor” written by Konstantin Sterkhov and “Inspirations & Technical Breakthroughs: Secrets from the Contemporary International Watercolor Masters Volume 1” written by Zhou Tianya & Ruan Hoe. \nMehaffey’s paintings are included in corporate\, public and private collections including Blue Cross Blue Shield and The Arches Paper Co.\, USA. In 2018 he was invited to participate in the International Watercolor Masters Exhibition in Weston Park England. His work is included in permanent collections of transparent watercolors at major institutions such as the Neville Public Museum (WI)\, the Muskegon Museum of Art\, Muskegon (MI)\, and the National Watercolor Museum of Mexico City\, among others. \nJoin us for what will be a memorable evening from one of America’s most respected artists.

SUMMARY:NWWS June 2023 General Meeting Demonstration with Dale Laitinen
DESCRIPTION:Dale Laitinen has been painting for over forty years\, thirty five of those in watercolor\, and he’ll soon be sharing his vibrant talent with NWWS. \nHis watercolors are fluid and exuberant\, with confidant full on brushstrokes. He moves easily between objective and nonobjective painting\, sometimes somewhere in-between\, but always intriguing and an invitation for the viewer to stay a while. Contrast that loose energy with his equally beautiful\, carefully engineered more structured paintings and you come away amazed at such a wonderful talent range. His travels across the American west figure prominently in his work. \nOne of the signatures of a Laitinen painting is the long view with the natural forms of the topography being foremost. His works extend to the interaction between structures such as roads\, dams\, canals\, powerhouses\, and the natural landscape. In one of these paintings one might find a concrete dam that spans a river canyon\, or a highway that cuts through desert sandstone\, or a shadow of a bridge that crawls slowly across a red rock wall. \nLaitinen’s work has been featured in several books\, including “The Splash Series”\, “Painting with the White of your Paper”\, and “The The Transparent Watercolor Wheel”\, and in several periodicals\, including “The Artist’s Magazine”\, “Watercolor Magic”\, “Watercolor Magazine”\, and “Drawingboard Magazine”. \nHe is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West and an active workshop instructor. \nJoin us for this very special night with an immense talent and enjoy watching Dale work his brushstroke magic.

SUMMARY:Lorena Massa Workshop
DESCRIPTION:LORENA MASSA | WORKSHOPS INTERNATIONAL  \nAUGUST 12\, 2023 – 10:00 – 1:00 (PACIFIC TIME) \nLorena Massa\, a Daniel Smith Brand Ambassador from Italy\, is in love with colors and the hidden simplicity and beauty of small things. In her own words\, “Humans\, animals and flowers enchant me… The most interesting part of painting a portrait is to be able to represent the subject’s soul\, personality\, and dreams. This is a challenge that fascinates me.” You see Lorena’s connection with her subjects in every painting. \nOur second Workshops International welcomes Lorena as she shares her passion for portraits\, bringing her subjects to life through layers of glowing watercolor. Her love of art is contagious and joyful\, and NWWS is excited to bring this encouraging and supportive instructor to students of all skill levels. \nLorena’s 3-hour workshop will be a cheerful experience. An admired and respected artist and instructor in Europe\, NWWS is pleased to introduce her to our members and nonmembers alike.

SUMMARY:Samish Island PaintOut - September
DESCRIPTION:Artists working in all mediums love Paint-Out: collage artists\, watercolorists\, oil & acrylic painters\, knitters\, and other media artists. Some artists work on small pieces\, but there is space for those working very large. There is a large bulletin board where artists pin their finished work for all to see\, and artists enjoy being the first one up. \nThe camp’s accommodations are brightly painted quaint heated rustic cabins with a bathroom nearby. For a few more dollars\, there are cabins with a shared bathroom facility\, and accommodations for these are on a first-come-first-served basis with preference given to those who are willing to share. \nCOSTS: Camp cost is very reasonable no matter which accommodation type you choose. For example\, the most popular choice is the “full 4-day camp\, Standard cabin\, and with meals” and is $334.00. There are also options to attend camp for fewer days or to attend camp and find accommodations elsewhere. While planning\, note the Cancellation Policy\, below

SUMMARY:SEPT 2023 GENERAL MEETING DEMONSTRATION WITH STAN KURTH
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER 26\, 2023 – NWWS is delighted to bring the brilliance of Stan Kurth to our meeting. \nMEETING START TIME: 7:00 (Pacific) \n“My definition of intuitive painting is beginning the work without any preliminary thoughts or plans for a particular object or subject as an end\, but rather starting on a blank substrate\, making marks with a variety of tools\, creating a library of design elements and applying design principles until a personal aesthetic is achieved. I do not use any external reference”\, says the very intuitive Stan Kurth. \nAt the Sept. general meeting\, you’ll watch intuitive at work. Beginning with blank paper full of potential\, his painting unfolds with marks\, paint\, texture\, movement\, and careful design and color judgement. The finished painting is an invitation to come in\, walk around\, find something new at each turn\, and enjoy all of it. \nYou are sure to take away jewels of inspiration from this evening of energy and generous instruction. Don’t miss it! \nAfter logging in\, click the button to the right to register for the webinar.

SUMMARY:AZR- Nov. 13\, 2023: ANGELA BANDURKA | FOCUS: DRAWING IS KEY!
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 1:00 (Pacific). Virtual doors open 12:45. \nPAINTINGS  FOR BANDURKA CRITIQUE DUE DATE: NOV. 2\, 2023 \nSEND PAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE TO:  azr@nwws.org \nIn the second month of “Essentials: The Elements of Design”\, Angela Bandurka spotlights the importance of drawing with “Focus: Drawing is Key!” Looking at Angela’s work\, you see her drawing skills shine with an understanding of perspective\, accurately capturing form\, and love of detail. Examining her work\, it is clear that her love of drawing is the underpinning of her beautiful work. Learn how the proper\, underlying drawing is worth your focus and is integral to your painting’s success. \nPREPARING FOR THE NOVEMBER EVENT\, by Angela Bandurka: \n“Drawing is not just pencil on paper – it’s also paint on canvas or ink on vellum. Drawing represents marks on any surface with attention to perspective and proportion to create an image. Drawing for a painting is a different beast than what most people think of when the word is used. A completed\, beautifully rendered drawing with shading is a finished piece on its own. Many painters\, including myself\, create a simpler version of a drawing for a painting (and I include the shadows). It becomes my roadmap\, but it’s a design element. \nI’d love to talk with folks who are interested in all forms of drawing and how it could improve their work\, including artists who work in a more abstracted way\, learning to use different marks and elements that are representative of an object in their paintings and artists creating likeness in their portraits or landscapes. \nFor the Nov. AZR event\, submit your paintings or drawings in any stage of completion and we will talk about the challenges you encountered and what might be done to improve it. \nIf you’re someone who’d like the challenge of an assignment\, here’s one to try: find a subject matter you like (portrait\, landscape\, or other) and draw it in a sketchbook using paint or any drawing tools you like and in only one color. It could be a basis for a painting you’re planning. You can add value if you like\, though it’s not necessary. Now\, how would you alter the drawing to make it more interesting? What can you remove or add? Do the marks you make add or detract from the drawing? I request that the drawing is not traced (though graphing is ok!)”

For her\, it is because she cannot not paint the eloquent expressions of what she feels about everything around her: nature\, people\, activities and the world. \nShe sees art as a great c communicator. Her greatest pleasure is when someone responds emotionally to her work\, comes close to it\, finds more and more exciting details\, and happily decides they must have it. \nHow she achieves a painting that conveys such attraction to the viewer is multi-faceted\, but shape\, form\, and variety are key elements for success\, and the February AZR event will emphasize the importance of them as she reviews the submitted paintings. \nStella has written the following for those who would like to have their work critiqued. Also\, we are working to add another Paul Wang workshop in the future so that everyone will get an opportunity to learn from this incredible artist. \nTIME: 8:00 am – 11:00 am (pacific) \nPAUL WANG is a passionate art and design educator from Singapore. Inspired by his interior architecture and stage design training\, his sketches are always bursting with dramatic colors. His strokes and splashes may look spontaneous but are highly choreographed. Paul’s distinctive use of vivid colors and convoluted lines seeks to encapsulate the ever-changing world. Join us for this special opportunity to explore joyful expression with both traditional and unconventional tools with an outstanding talent and educator. \nPaul has a unique way of capturing the urban landscape and using sketches to tell stories\, one that leaves monotony behind. His passion for the playful is ever present\, and with his encouragement\, you’ll soon be creating bold and lyrical marks and adapting them to create movement-inspired paintings. \nClick the “SUPPLY LIST” button for additional class information. You receive plenty of notice to be properly prepared for the workshop. Watch your inbox in March 2024 for more information. \nAll skill levels are welcome to attend.
