SUMMARY:AZR- OCTOBER 14\, 2024: ANGELA BANDURKA: FOCUS: The Power of Ovals
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 1:00 (Pacific). Virtual doors open 12:45.\nPainting submissions due date: October 1\, 2024. \nIf you have already registered for this event and would like to submit paintings for critique\, simply begin with step 2 in the “To Submit Work for Review” instructions (below) by Oct. 1\, 2024. \nWelcome back to AZR after the fine summer break! \nWe’re delighted to begin the new season of AZR with Angela Bandurka. Angela Bandurka creates beautiful acrylic paintings in what she calls “Impressionistic Realism”\, exploring the theme of connection. She has been a full time artist and art instructor since 2008 and her pleasant\, instructive skills maximize the benefit of a critique conversation with her. \nThe subject matter of her work requires precise underlying drawing skills\, and “The Power of Ovals” is the foundation for the event on Oct. 14th\, 2024. The ellipse as part of perspective drawing can be a challenge\, and this event will take some of the mystery out of getting the “ovals” just right. \nAngela asks that members submit artwork\, especially still life paintings\, that contain ellipses. \nCLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM ANGELA \nNEW AND IMPORTANT! We are implementing a new painting submission system\, and NWWS members may submit up to two paintings. DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 1:00 (Pacific). Virtual doors open 12:45. \nCLICK: CANFIELD WORKSHEET AND READING FOR CRITIQUED PAINTINGS \nPAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE (members only)\nDUE DATE: Jan 31\, 2023 \nSEND PAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE TO:  azr@nwws.org \nWelcome\, Stella Canfield\, to February’s AZR event! \nStella Canfield knows why she paints. For her\, it is because she cannot not paint the eloquent expressions of what she feels about everything around her: nature\, people\, activities and the world. \nShe sees art as a great c communicator. Her greatest pleasure is when someone responds emotionally to her work\, comes close to it\, finds more and more exciting details\, and happily decides they must have it. \nHow she achieves a painting that conveys such attraction to the viewer is multi-faceted\, but shape\, form\, and variety are key elements for success\, and the February AZR event will emphasize the importance of them as she reviews the submitted paintings. \nStella has written the following for those who would like to have their work critiqued. SUMMARY:AZR- Nov. 13\, 2023: ANGELA BANDURKA | FOCUS: DRAWING IS KEY!
DESCRIPTION:START TIME: 1:00 (Pacific). Virtual doors open 12:45. \nPAINTINGS  FOR BANDURKA CRITIQUE DUE DATE: NOV. 2\, 2023 \nSEND PAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE TO:  azr@nwws.org \nIn the second month of “Essentials: The Elements of Design”\, Angela Bandurka spotlights the importance of drawing with “Focus: Drawing is Key!” Looking at Angela’s work\, you see her drawing skills shine with an understanding of perspective\, accurately capturing form\, and love of detail. Examining her work\, it is clear that her love of drawing is the underpinning of her beautiful work. Learn how the proper\, underlying drawing is worth your focus and is integral to your painting’s success. \nPREPARING FOR THE NOVEMBER EVENT\, by Angela Bandurka: \n“Drawing is not just pencil on paper – it’s also paint on canvas or ink on vellum. Drawing represents marks on any surface with attention to perspective and proportion to create an image. Drawing for a painting is a different beast than what most people think of when the word is used. A completed\, beautifully rendered drawing with shading is a finished piece on its own. Many painters\, including myself\, create a simpler version of a drawing for a painting (and I include the shadows). It becomes my roadmap\, but it’s a design element. \nI’d love to talk with folks who are interested in all forms of drawing and how it could improve their work\, including artists who work in a more abstracted way\, learning to use different marks and elements that are representative of an object in their paintings and artists creating likeness in their portraits or landscapes. \nFor the Nov. AZR event\, submit your paintings or drawings in any stage of completion and we will talk about the challenges you encountered and what might be done to improve it. \nIf you’re someone who’d like the challenge of an assignment\, here’s one to try: find a subject matter you like (portrait\, landscape\, or other) and draw it in a sketchbook using paint or any drawing tools you like and in only one color. It could be a basis for a painting you’re planning. You can add value if you like\, though it’s not necessary. Now\, how would you alter the drawing to make it more interesting? What can you remove or add? Do the marks you make add or detract from the drawing? I request that the drawing is not traced (though graphing is ok!)”

SUMMARY:AZR - May: Andy Evansen
DESCRIPTION:Please note the change of date to May 1\, 2023. \nAndy Evansen’s focus will be on plein air painting during this month’s AZR event \nAPRIL 20\, 2023: DEADLINE TO SUBMIT PAINTINGS FOR CRITIQUE. If you would like to submit a plein air painting for possible critique\, register right away and find the instructions within the registration confirmation for the event.\nAndy is a Signature Member of AWS\, PAPA\, RRWS\, and TWSA. His recognizable ‘style’ was inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain\, David Curtis\, Ed Seago and Edward Wesson\, among others. He found himself attempting to capture the landscape with the same economy of brushstroke\, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition\, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty\, subjects that many would simply pass by.

All art lovers are encouraged to register for this special event. \nDon’t miss this special day with one of America’s finest artists and instructors.

SUMMARY:Artist Zoom Room - April: Jed Dorsey
DESCRIPTION:NWWS is delighted to bring the brilliance of Jed Dorsey to our Artist Zoom Room on April 10\, 2023. Many NWWS members work in several mediums\, so this demo will be a treat for acrylic artists and encouragment for others to try this very versatile watermedia. \nJed represents the fourth generation of artists in his family. His father\, Jack Dorsey\, is also a professional\, well known artist. Like many artists\, Jed was painting at an early age and selling paintings as young as age eleven. \nJed and his family traditionally pursued watercolor\, but gallery hopping in Canada exposed him to the intriguing brilliance of acrylic and it was instantly appealing. That very week began his exciting journey with acrylics. He painted for many years as a secondary pursuit\, but became a full time artist in 2016. He loves how light changes objects such as common garbage cans\, buildings\, plants trees–everything. Filtered sunlight shining through trees onto a road\, river\, sidewalk\, or path is favorite subject matter. Having lived in both rural and urban locations he sees beauty in both lush landscapes and structured cityscapes. Whether painting en plein air or in the studio with a photo reference\, he interprets what he sees with an intent to create a beautiful piece of personal art\, nothing literal.
