Workshops & Painting Events

NEXT WORKSHOP: DON ANDREWS – April 30 - May 3, 2018
The Northwest Watercolor Society hosts two 4-5 day workshops every year. Each workshop accompanies the opening of one of our major exhibitions: the Annual International Open Exhibition or Waterworks Unplugged, our membership exhibition. Internationally known artists and instructors who jury the exhibitions are well known for providing excellent instruction in water media.
NWWS workshops can include up to 22 participants and are hosted in a wonderful, spacious venue. Snacks and beverages are provided. For workshop information contact workshop chair Molly Murrah at
NWWS is very proud of its workshops and we are especially proud of the talented artists invited to join us in Seattle to judge our exhibitions and teach our workshop participants. Each artist/instructor is uniquely qualified and well known in the international artist community, and we are lucky to have them as creative partners.

NWWS members are very fortunate to have Daniel Smith Artists Materials stores, including the manufacturing facility, in the heart of the city of Seattle. Daniel Smith is the leader in the innovative manufacturing of watercolors (and oils) sought after by artists worldwide. Northwest artists were among the first to appreciate the brilliance of their high-performance Quinacridone colors and, later, the exciting PrimaTek and Luminescent Watercolors. Making beautiful, innovative, and high quality artists paints, which perform consistently from tube to tube, year after year, makes Daniel Smith paints loved and respected by artists everywhere.
While their many products are available by internet order, visiting their stores is time spent strolling through inspiration!

Open Art Studio
Open Art Studio days are hours of casual painting and BYO lunch at either the Seattle Daniel Smith Artists Materials or St. Louise church in Bellevue, WA.
NWWS has coordinated with Daniel Smith (thank you, DS!) as the Seattle location and St. Louise Church as the Bellevue location to bring artists together for what we love most: painting. Too, these painting days are shared with our friends from EAFA, the Evergreen Association of Fine Art so you will likely see new faces
If you are an artist who is unable to attend the NWWS evening meetings, this is a great monthly daytime opportunity to be a part of NWWS. If you want to bring a guest to paint along, please do so!
The intention is to gather together, talk, laugh, and simply enjoy painting. Bring any supplies you need and work on whatever you’d like. You might choose to tackle Jeff Waters’ bi-monthly “Hot Press” challenge, the monthly Facebook challenge or whatever your painting whim is for that day
Days of the week each may change, so check the Calendar and Events page so you have the most current information.
We look forward to seeing you!

Three wonderful times each year, about 45 artists come to beautiful Samish Island (north of Seattle, WA) to breathe in the clean air and concentrate on painting. The view is breathtaking, the atmosphere is generous and inviting as artists make new friends and see friends they haven’t seen in a while. Paint-Out is held on the scenic grounds of Church of Christ Church Camp.
The most important experience is the opportunity to paint with no interruptions (unless you want!) and with plenty of space to work. Most artists come to paint and are serious, focused, and productive. Subject matter is abundant whether you are a plein air or studio painter. Puget Sound is just outside the door, oyster beds are nearby, the camp has a large salt lake for walking, the tides constantly change, and, well, there is simply something to paint all around you! If you are new to an art process, many will share and teach. Paint Out is the perfect place to learn, explore, and solve your own art challenges without even needing to stop and cook! The kitchen staff spoils everyone with amazing food and no one has to worry about the dirty dishes. Just paint!
Artists working in all mediums love Paint-Out: collage artists, watercolorists, oil & acrylic painters, and other media artists. Some artists work on small pieces, but there is space for those working very large. There is a large bulletin board where artists pin their finished work for all to see, and artists enjoy being the first one up.
Other events might be (optional) art demonstrations or, for instance, an art materials representative may demonstrate new product and challenge us in a surprise competition. Artists have enjoyed movie nights, massages, tarot card readings or slide shows. Take a stroll on the beach or enjoy the wild life, including eagles and herons, or just read and relax. There is always something new and it is all up to you!
The camp’s accommodations are brightly painted quaint rustic cabins. For a few more dollars, there are cabins with a shared bathroom facility, and accommodations for those are on a first-come-first-served basis. The camp provides 3 excellent meals each day for the artists and the cost of meals is included.

You do not have to be a member of NWWS to participate. All artists are welcome and we are certain you’ll come back to Paint-Out time and time again.
To attend the Paint-Out retreat, print, complete, and mail the registration form with your payment to the address on the form.
Registration is by U.S. Mail only
Paint-Out is popular and fills up fast, so please register as soon as possible.
