Northwest Watercolor Foundation
Gold Grant Award

The Northwest Watercolor Foundation is a nonprofit arm of the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS).  One of the purposes of the Foundation is to support emerging young visual artists by providing financial awards to committed, deserving students.

Established in the early 1990s, the Gold Grant Award has been presented annually to an outstanding and promising art student.  This year the amount given will be $2500.

Full-time art majors enrolled in a community college or university in Washington, Oregon or Idaho and working in a variety of two-dimensional media are eligible for the Foundation’s annual Gold Grant Award.

Students are required to submit an application, five examples of their best work in any 2-D media (other than computer or photography), a descriptive list of images submitted, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member,  a photo of themselves, an artist’s statement and a short biography.

The winner is honored at a board dinner and awarded their scholarship at a meeting of the Northwest Watercolor Society in April.  Winners are expected to attend the meeting to accept the award.

Students who have demonstrated a desire to continue their studies and complete their degree are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to write an artist’s statement and make image submissions in a professional manner.  We look forward to receiving the applications.

If there are any questions  relating to the Gold Grant Award or if you would like posters or applications for yourself or your college or university, please feel free to contact the Gold Grant Chairperson Ann Breckon at annbreckon@gmail.com, or call at 425-644-4245.

The NWWF is pleased to announce that Ross Quesnell, a junior at Central Washington University in Ellensberg, WA is the recipient of the  Foundation's $1500 GOLD GRANT AWARD FOR 2011.
The Gold Grant is an educational award that was started in the early 1990’s by the Northwest Watercolor Society as an annual scholarship given by the Society’s Northwest Watercolor Foundation, the service and community involvement non-profit organization associated with NWWS.  Previous recipients have been high school seniors or college students who have seriously dedicated themselves to the study and pursuit of a career in art.  This year the Foundation accepted 17 applications by art majors in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Jurors for this year's scholarship were impressed with Ross Quesnell's skill and creativity in diverse artistic media and with his artist's statement where he discussed plans to pursue a career in the educational department of an art museum.
Every scholarship applicant also submits a biography, an essay on what being an artist means to them, and a letter of recommendation by faculty at the school they attend.
Mr. Quesnell and his parents Paul and Sandy Quesnell of Kennewick, WA, attended a dinner in his honor and he was presented with the $1500.00 award at the general meeting of the Northwest Watercolor Society in Bellevue, Washington on April 26, 2011.
For information about donating to the Foundation, or applying for the Gold Grant to be awarded in the spring of 2012, contact Ann Breckon at annbreckon@gmail.com.
