Juror's Statement

First of all, I would like to congratulate each and every artist who is included in this year’s NWWS exhibition. Secondly, I would like to thank the NWWS so very much for the honor and privilege of being your juror this year. It was a joy to jury this exhibition because of the many quality paintings entered!

Because there are no rules to guide jurors in selecting a show and its awards, each juror necessarily brings his or her own subjective and sometimes “quirky” opinions to the process, and it is those opinions that form the standards that guide their choices.

My standards for jurying are the same standards I set for my own work. I look for unique and creative paintings that contain a personal point of view and a solid design. I also look for fully resolved works that communicate something meaningful, whether a subject is present or not. And then, there’s that indefinable entity called beauty. I don’t look for a “pretty” kind of beauty, but the kind of beauty that results when an artist is passionately engaged with all of the above.
